** new thought, could it be the PulseAudio that is the problem? I've been doing some RTFMing and it seems Kodi outputs by default to PulseAudio, and it's the default settings I had when I originally had it working.
KODI DTS DECODER TV
All I know is that XBMC on the mac mini gives me the blue light when connected via optical cable directly to the amp, then if I switch output to HDMI via the TV and back to the amp via optical cable out of the TV (which is the exact setup of the QNAP) then I get the blue light again. I don't know what you mean by an unaltered dts bitstream. watching a film you don't get the surround effect. When the light is not on, I am not really sure what's going on because I sometimes get sound out of all speakers, but e.g. So far as I know, when the light is on I am getting surround sound out of the speakers. What I mean by multi-channel decoding, is that there is a blue light front and centre on the AMP display, labelled 'multichannel decoding' and when it gets the right stream, this light comes on. You're going to laugh at me for being stupid. This gives me sound, but the 'multichannel decoding' light doesn't come on, but when I select DTS capable receiver in expert settings, I get no sound output at all. The only thing I am fairly sure of is that I should be selecting passthrough. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to when it works. Can anyone recommend a systematic approach to trying to get DTS payback on the QNAP? I've found DTS to be incredibly temperamental and hard to get to work on the mac mini and now the QNAP with Plex, Kodi and XBMC.

Nothing I do can get that blue light to come on the front of the amp telling me it is doing multichannel decoding.

I also tried reading several threads on here and following suggestions but no luck. I have tried every possible combination of expert audio settings I can imagine in Kodi to no avail.

Now I know it can work because I saw it once at the start, so it shouldn't be a problem with the cables or the TV. It's worth mentioning that the only way I can tell if it is working is whether the blue light comes on the front of the amp labelled 'multichannel decoding'. now, as before, I cannot get the DTS working on the QNAP via Kodi at all! And I am not aware of changing any relevant setting. I went ahead and configured the video output settings in kodi and then messed about installing other apps on the QNAP. In fact I have messed around endlessly on the mac mini with kodi, XBMC and Plex not really understanding what I was doing, and only getting it to work on XBMC. I was very pleased as I had never managed to get DTS working for Kodi on my mac mini with the same setup. When I first fired up Kodi and played a video from the QNAP, the blue multichannel decoding light came on on the amplifier. I have a QNAP TS-453A connected to my LG TV via HDMI and then with an optical cable to my old Sony STR-DB790 6Ch amplifier, which should be DTS and dolby digital compatible.
